I've been all over this for pretty much the last year. At least in our field only the very longest of long tail words don't have overwhelming levels of competition. I have number one ranking on several long tail keywords but that accounts for only around 5% of my search traffic.

If you have a secret sauce for this I'l be pleased to here about it.
