Is there such a thing as an expert blogger? I guess that depends on the definition, but this isn’t a science developed by thousands of people over hundreds of years. It’s new, it changes everyday, and it doesn’t have any rules.
So that probably means there’s no such thing as an expert, but there are those with acknowledged expertise – the ones people who know what they’re looking at follow, because they’ll learn something.
And there’s certainly such a thing as a novice blogger. S/he’ll be struggling to find a way through the new norms of blogging – nothing like that academic stuff at school. S/he’ll be struggling to find things to say. S/he’ll be worrying about which “voice” to choose.
S/he could do a lot worse than follow what the guys at Copyblogger publish. They’re generous with advice, and manage to be entertaining, informative and challenging all at the same time.
A great example is The 7 Harsh Realities of Social Media Marketing by Sonia Simone. Read the full article for the explanations, but here are the 7:
Sonia’s Rules
#1: No one is reading your blog
#2: You’ve got to give (some of) your best stuff away
#3: It will eat your life (if you let it)
#4: Social media hates selling
#5: What they say is a million times more important than what you say
#6: A blog is not a marketing plan
#7: You don’t get to opt out
